What if successful counselling isn’t just about technique?

We often assume that successful counselling and positive change are mainly about finding the right therapist or the right therapeutic technique. So, what really contributes to successful counselling outcomes?

40% — Client Factors  (You)
Motivation, effort, insight, engagement, life context, and personal resources.

30% — The Therapeutic Relationship
Alliance, trust, empathy, collaboration, feeling heard and supported.

15% — Expectancy/Hope
Belief that change is possible, hope for the future.

15% — The Therapeutic Approach
The specific techniques and approaches used such as CBT, narrative therapy, solution-focused therapy, and others.

What does this mean?

Counselling isn’t simply about finding the “right” technique. You bring something important to the counselling process, your counsellor brings something important to the process, and the relationship you build together matters!

Good counselling isn’t something that is done to you. It’s something we do together.

They should not be interpreted as precise or universal measures of what determines counselling outcomes. Individual outcomes vary, and many factors can contribute to meaningful change.
